Below are the nominees for the 2025 Blaster Awards. The winners will be announced at an in-person, red-carpet, student-athlete-only ceremony on the evening of April 22 at Volk Gym.

The Blaster Awards were established in 2016 to honor the best in Mines Athletics. Through nominations and votes from Mines' head coaches, the 2025 edition will feature 14 awards.

Male Rookie of the Year

Awarded to an outstanding male athlete who is in their first year of eligibility (either true freshman or redshirt freshman). Transfers are not eligible unless they are a redshirt freshman.

Hit for the cycle against Adams State on Feb. 22 with two home runs, one triple, one double, and one single.
NCBWA Regional Hitter of the Week and RMAC Player of the Week on Feb. 25
Tied for #1 in the program record book for runs scored in a game and #2 for hits in consecutive at-bats.
Currently hitting .377 with 38 runs on 63 hits including 18 doubles, two triples, and six home runs with 36 RBI
Went 21-10 as a true freshman starting at 157 pounds.
Was nationally ranked as high as #9.
Was the Mines Rookie Open champion and 7th at the Midwest Classic.
2025 All-American in the 500-free and 1000-free, finish #7 in the country in both events.

Female Rookie of the Year

Awarded to an outstanding female athlete who is in their first year of eligibility (either true freshman or redshirt freshman). Transfers are not eligible unless they are a redshirt freshman.

Started 31 of 33 games, splitting time between second and third base, and led team in batting for the first six weeks of season.
Batted .341 with 30 hits, two doubles, eight RBI and 10 runs scored while fielding .961 in 102 chances before suffering a season-ending injury the end of March.
Began her career on a four-game hitting streak and hit safely in six of 10 games to begin the season.
Registered nine multi-hit games and four games with three or more hits.
Finished 57th in the nation at her first NCAA XC championships and helped Mines take #5 as a team.
USTFCCCA All-Region after taking 22nd at the South Central Region XC championships.
Also, in track & field helped Mines win the indoor title by taking silver in the 3K and bronze in the 5K and was an NCAA qualifier in the 3K.
During outdoor track & field, broke the program record in her first-ever collegiate steeplechase.
Qualified for the NCAA championships in the 50-free, 100-free, and 200-free.
Finished top-40 in the nation in the 100-free and 200-free.

Touts a career-high 15 doubles and 40 runs scored so far this season.
Recorded multiple hits in 15 games to date in 2025.
RMAC Defensive Player of the Year and an all-American.
Started all 23 matches and was third on the team with 1,921 minutes played.
Scored four goals with two assists for 10 points with three goals being game-winners.
Part of a defense that recorded 13 shutouts and allowed 0.57 goals and 7.8 shots per match.
USTFCCCA First-Team All-America finishing #7 in the triple jump in her NCAA Indoor Championships debut.
Was the RMAC bronze medalist in the triple jump to help Mines win the team indoor championship.
Broke the Mines triple jump record multiple times indoors with 12.40m at the NCAA Championships; previous record had stood since 2003.
Also broke the Mines triple jump record multiple times outdoors.

Qualified for the NCAA championships for a third straight season, competing in the 100-breast and 200-breast.

Comeback Player of the Year

Awarded to an athlete, male or female, who overcame injury, illness, or other adversity, to perform at a high level this season

Ava had to take a medical redshirt last year and was unable to train for most of the season. She worked hard over the summer and came into this season ready to go. During the November mid-season invitational she had nine best times, followed by two more best times in spring dual meets. She finished the season going lifetime best times in 100% of her races by large margins: 2 seconds in the 50 back, 2 seconds in the 100 back, 3 seconds in the 200 back, 2 seconds in the 200 breast, 2 seconds in the 100 breast, and 0.75 in the 50 breast. For short races, that is a lot of time. She did all this while earning a 3.9 GPA for the Fall and being on our team’s leadership committee.
Yahir was involved in a car accident in the summer of 2023 that caused the amputation of his left leg above the knee. After battling through multiple surgeries, hospital stays, and learning to walk with a prosthetic, he returned to training on the wrestling mat in the spring of 2024. In November 2024, he competed in the Mines Rookie Open, winning his first match by fall. Jack strained his hip flexor and adductor (groin) during training in October 2024. He worked tirelessly with Kelsey, our athletic trainer, to finally get back to full swimming in February 2025. His attitude and work ethic throughout this injury were a source of light for the rest of the team. He was surprisingly able to race fairly well given his long-term injury, but the true value was his commitment to supporting his teammates and having perspective.
Jonah underwent major hip injury, and basically missed 18 months. He came back to break the program record in the 400m and was an all-American as part of the distance medley relay.
Raul became available to play after two (2) ACL surgeries, one in 2021 and one in 2022, that wiped out his whole fall season each year. He rehabbed back to playing 172 minutes in 2023. That number grew to 670 minutes in 12 games during the 2024 season. During that span he recorded five goals and six assists off of 19 shots on goal.
Ethan went over one year without a race. He ended his 2023 cross country season at the Roadrunners Invitational with a stress fracture in his hip. Ethan did not compete at all during the indoor and outdoor track season. He was cleared to start running in the spring and his workouts involved pacing the women. He spent all summer running early in the morning and building his fitness to have a breakthrough season. He returned to the Roadrunners Invitational in 2024 and placed #8. He then went on to finish #3 at the Lewis Cross Over and #9 at the NCAA championship. Ethan went from never competing in a NCAA championship to finishing in the top-10. His performance at the NCAA championships was a big reason why we were able to upset Wingate and win the national title.

SAAC Community Impact Award

The SAAC Community Impact award is voted upon by the membership of SAAC to recognize the outstanding community service by either one student-athlete, a group, or a team.

Ava is the consummate Mines student-athlete – with a 3.9 GPA this Fall (3.3 cum), she was our fourth-highest point scorer at the RMAC championships in individual events, going lifetime best times in 100% of her races. Ava does that and serves the campus and greater community. She has been on SAAC for three years and served as campus committee chair for the past two years where she contributed to organizing events on campus for students and making decisions within Mines (Tie Dye event for all students). Ava attended the RMAC SAAC retreat this summer and communicates RMAC and DII updates within the Mines SAAC. She has also been a Peer Educator for the past two years and on the wellness committee promoting heath, wellness and wellbeing for students on campus. She is a member of SWE and is a captain for the swim team as she heads into her redshirt senior year at Mines.
Yahir is an outstanding candidate for the Community Service Blaster Award. He is deeply involved in the Greeley community where he regularly shares his story of overcoming a life-changing accident to inspire others. He volunteers his time speaking at events, supporting students at Mines, and staying active in his church, Story Line. He’s consistently giving back, whether through mentorship, service, or simply showing up for others. His dedication, resilience, and willingness to help make a real impact—and make him more than deserving of this recognition.

Izaiah Padilla is a student-athlete who strives to achieve his academic and athletic goals, all while maintaining strong relationships and being actively involved in the community. He is someone who can be seen with a smile and a charismatic personality in each environment he is in. Izaiah creates opportunities and makes time to be involved with Red Rocks Church. Izaiah does not only lead in youth groups but also has a great voice that accompanies the worship team and their deliverance of amazing music. He keeps a good head on his shoulders, despite injury, and pushes himself to lead others down a good path. Singing and leading takes a great deal of time and effort, and Izaiah goes above and beyond by providing his presence around the Golden community as well. Izaiah has helped deliver and provide his service in making sure the Rotary Club has enough hands on deck. Izaiah will continue to find ways to impact the community and others around him.
Callie is the lead for the women's soccer Team Impact player (Lily) and is an active member of SAAC.
Andres has been Mr. Mines his entire four years. He has been the SAAC Rep on USG for two years, he has been on SAAC for three years. Andres has been a Lead Peer Educator for Mines Betsy’s friends leading workshops and tabling events regarding student wellness, inclusion and interpersonal violence. He also has a leadership position on the swim team as community outreach coordinator where he is the lead on Team Impact – supporting the child and family paired with our team. Andres nearly single-handedly organized the All-Sports Swim Meet and he has been a lead to organized volunteer projects in the community with the Be A Tool Neighborhood Rehab Project which helps those in the community work on their homes who are unable (landscaping, painting, other home repairs). Andres also holds a 3.95 cumulative GPA and has been instrumental to our team scoring points at the conference championships. Below is a list view of Andres' impact.

Jake led the Mines FB x Team IMPACT partnership to add Quinn onto the football team. He also served as a math tutor at D'evlyn High School on Monday's during Fall 2024 - during the season. Furthermore, Jake created the Mines Madness 3v3 basketball tourney (April 26th, 2025) to raise money for the Colorado Center for the Blind. He also served and provided service opportunities for Mines students with the Colorado Center for the Blind.

Male Iron Digger Award

Awarded to two seniors, one male and one female, who has demonstrated unparalleled dedication to physical preparation. Candidates will have been at the forefront of their team’s training in both personal improvement and leadership, exemplifying what it means to work behind the scenes. Candidates must have appeared in at least 50% of their team's competitions. This award is voted on by the strength & conditioning staff.

Awarded to a male senior who has completed their eligibility and has distinguished themselves in an outstanding manner in achievement, leadership, and school spirit over the course of their Mines careers.

Shane has competed for the Orediggers in the pole vault and served as a team leader for all four years of his collegiate career. He has earned five all-RMAC awards in the pole vault with a career-best clearance of 4.75m.
Grayston's teammates say the following about him. He is a person that everyone should look up to. He leads with confidence and does it with a heart for his teammates. Being a strong student, a dedicated wrestler, and a leader isn’t easy, but Grayston does it without ever complaining, making others wonder how he can do it. His drive, focus, and the way he supports others around him truly sets him apart. He is always willing to motivate his teammates or just share a laugh with them. He continues to work hard outside of school too, working in many internships and continuing his field knowledge. He has accomplished a lot as a wrestler, one of the winningest Mines wrestlers ever, multiple trips to nationals, spent a lot of time in the national rankings, and owns a ton of pins. He also has been a poster for Mines academics, three-time RMAC academic wrestler of the year, Elite 90 award winner, NWCA Academic All-American, and helps his younger teammates in classes. Ultimately, Grayston has been a great wrestler, a great student, a great leader, a great teammate, and a great friend.

Furthermore, Grayston has consistently demonstrated strong leadership qualities throughout his time as a captain at Mines. One of his most defining traits is his integrity, he continually strives to better himself while uplifting those around him. His communication skills are another standout strength; he effectively organizes and implements team events, ensuring everyone is informed and involved. This year particularly, Grayston showed excellent decision-making skills, navigating difficult choices around scheduling and team development with clarity and confidence. His confidence not only helps the team believe in him but also creates a sense of trust and unity. When faced with challenges or setbacks, Grayston responds with resilience, keeping the team focused and motivated. In addition to these qualities, he also embodies true school spirit. Whether he's leading on the field or participating in campus events, Grayston proudly represents Mines and encourages others to do the same, fostering a strong sense of pride and community within the team.
As a two-year captain. Michael is a natural leader. He has given the Mines swim program his passion and energy for four years. He is a leader by example while also leading from the front with his voice. Michael is a great communicator, honest and trustworthy. As a leader on the team, he has had to handle more than one difficult event and did so as best a leader could and that show his maturity. Michael carries the traditions of Mines and the swim program with him every day as captain and leader.
Riley came back for a fifth, and final season, to lead Mines to a sweep of the RMAC titles and a spot in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship. In his final season, he was named First-Team All-RMAC, RMAC All-Tournament, NABC Second-Team All-District and was selected to the NABC Division II College All-Star Game. He started all but one game in 2024-25 and posted the best numbers of his career across the board in scoring, shooting, assists and steals and was a calming leadership presence whenever he was on the floor. He continued to evolve his game over the course of his five-year career, going from playing just 40 minutes as a freshman to logging over 700 minutes each of the last two seasons.
Loic is the most decorated male runner in Mines history with 14 All-American performances across cross country and track & field. He is the only Oredigger in program history with three top-10 performances at the NCAA XC championships. Loic helped Mines cross country to national championships in both 2022 and 2024. Most recently, he finished as national runner-up in both the indoor 3K and 5K.
First, and foremost, Nic was a team captain on one of the best football teams in the nation. In his final season, Nic was named Associated Press D-II First-Team All-America and was a Gene Upshaw Award finalist as one of the top senior linemen in NCAA Division II. He started 51 games in his career at tackle, the most ever by a Mines offensive lineman. Nic is the third Van de Graaf sibling to attend Mines over the past decade which shows that Oredigger excellence runs through his veins.

Female Oredigger Excellence Award

Awarded to a female senior who has completed their eligibility and has distinguished themselves in an outstanding manner in achievement, leadership, and school spirit over the course of their Mines careers.

There may not be someone who has had quite the career arc that Cassidy has had during her four seasons at Mines. Originally recruited as a pitcher, she lead the softball team with 98 innings pitched as a freshman and was tied for the team lead in wins with five and was second with 71 strikeouts and posted an ERA of 5.14. In 2023, she threw 53 innings and had to overcome the mental struggles of not being able to follow up from her freshman season with similar numbers as a sophomore, finding herself on the losing end of several heartbreaking pitching decisions. In 2024, she went to the coaching staff and discussed a position change and after a successful fall season and with just 27 career plate appearances to her name, took over as the every day right fielder in a position she had zero previous experience at. She not only thrived, but flourished in her new role and emerged as a dangerous part in the middle of the lineup, racking up 10 doubles and belting eight home runs while driving in 27 runs. This season, she stepped out of her comfort zone once more, moving to first base and immediately making an impact on defense and at the plate, posting career numbers in nearly every category. She currently leads the RMAC and is among the national leaders not just in Division II but in all of the NCAA in home runs with 19 and is the first player in over five years to have 50 or more RBI in a season. She broke the program single-season home run record, is now third in career home runs with 28 and ranks among the top-10 in single season RBI.
Abbi entered the program as a high jumper, but converted to a thrower as time went on. After a career of development, she has emerged in her final season as one of the top weight throwers and hammer throwers in program history. She ranks #2 all-time at Mines in the hammer throw and #3 in the weight throw. In the hammer throw alone, she trails only current teammate Jenni Jarnagn. Abbi is also a team leader and supportive teammate who has led a breakout throws group which has rapidly improved to one of the best in the nation.
Reese is one of the greatest players in program history who has taken her talents overseas to Austria and is now playing professionally. Looking past all the awards and accolades, which are many and numerous, her leadership on the field as a captain each of the last two seasons enabled her teammates to be at ease and perform at their best on the way to sweeping the RMAC championships, winning the NCAA South Central Regional and advancing to the national quarterfinals. Yes, the statistics paint a picture of excellence on the field, but what truly makes Reese stand out is her character, determination, discipline, commitment, toughness and consistency. She brings a very human quality to our team and her teammates. She is honest, kind and funny. She helps others with their game by offering advice, ideas and a shoulder when necessary. She is a good source of academic wisdom and support to her teammates and undoubtedly anyone who seeks help from her. Reese on occasion will make the coaching staff aware of someone on the team who may need help she cannot provide.
Maggie is excellence. She was an excellent captain her senior year, leading by example bringing excitement and enthusiasm to each and every practice and competition. She is also a vocal and collaborative leader that brought each class together as a cohesive group throughout the year, while giving knowledge and help to the large freshman class. Maggie has led the women’s program with her steadfast beliefs and eye for culture, as well as holding true to traditions. She loves the sport and loves the school. In fact, she had enrolled at Mines before Claire gave her a spot to swim and Claire gave her a, “Well, you can join the team if you get faster while you are here.” And she did, dropping 37 seconds in her 1000 free, 17.5 seconds in her 500 free, 4.7 in her 200 and 1.5 in her 100 free. Maggie also is on the concrete canoe team going to regionals this weekend where she is also exercising her leadership and collaboration skills on that team. She really stands out as one of the best captains.

Male Athlete of the Year

Awarded to the most outstanding male athlete of the year

Broke the program records in both the 60m and 110m hurdles.

Led team in scoring average at 14.9 PPG and broke the 1,000 point mark in his career.
Led the RMAC in free-throw shooting and scored 20 points or more nine times.
Scored at leas 10 points in four of six postseason games and finished the year seventh all-time in single-season free-throw percentage.

2025 NCAA qualifier at 174 pounds after finishing third in Super Region 6.
Went 23-6, leading Mines in wins for the RMAC champions.

Broke Mines single-season home run record which is now up to 19.

Awarded to the most outstanding coaching staff of the year

Men were national champions and women finished #5 in the nation.
Totaled seven All-Americans including the highest individual finisher in women's program history.

29-5 overall record, 18-2 RMAC Record.
Swept the RMAC regular season & tournament titles for third time ever and advanced to the NCAA regional final.
