Celebrating 100 Years of the ROTC
We honor the Mines Golden Buffalo Battalion Reserve, known as "The West Point of the Rockies," celebrating 100 years of military leadership.
The ROTC was officially established at Mines in 1919, under an authorization from the U.S. Water Department. But the school's close relationship with the U.S. military dates back to Mines' inception. Mines has had a close relationship with the U.S. military having students in every war since 1874.
Colorado School of Mines is part of the thirteen school Army Buffalo Battalion, with The University of Colorado at Boulder being the host school. All Colorado School of Mines Army ROTC classes are taught on the CSM campus. The Colorado School of Mines Military Science Department offers Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC programs. Cadets experience leadership, team building and management training while attending the ROTC course. ROTC Cadets simultaneously pursue an undergraduate degree. Upon completion of ROTC requirements and receipt of their degree, Cadets are commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants and are sent to their respective posts or bases to complete their officer training, and begin their military leadership career.
The Mines ROTC Golden Buffalo Battalion, led by ROTC Asst. PMS/Dept Head Instructor MS II and III CPT Justin Mishler The Golden Buffalo Battalion develops leaders of character ready to influence others in a complex operating environment through professionalism, dedication, and teamwork while preserving a legacy of excellence and lifelong service to community.
We are hopeful for another 100 years and beyond for your great program on the campus of Mines. Thank you for your leadership and service.
