City of Golden

Colorado School of Mines is proud to call the city of Golden home. The original capital of Colorado, Golden is located only 20 minutes from downtown Denver at the base of the Rocky Mountains' foothills. Rich with culture, outdoor activities, scenic beauty, and a thriving downtown, Golden offers residents and visitors everything they could want while still maintaining a small town feel.

Named one of Business Insider's Top 30 College Towns (the only one in NCAA Division II), one of TripAdvisor's Best Small Cities To Visit, and one of the Best 35 Suburbs in America by Thrillest Travel, Golden has everything an athlete could wish for, too. The city's high elevation (ranging from 5,700' in town to more than 7,300' in the surrounding hills) provides a premier training ground for athletes and a definite homefield advantage for the Orediggers. A truly impressive roster of recreational options surrounds the Mines campus, including world-class hiking, mountain biking, road cycling, parasailing, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting - and that's just within walking distance. Some of the world's greatest ski destinations are less than an hour's drive from Golden, and the Rocky Mountains are at our doorstep, all while being connected to one of the nation's fastest-growing regions in the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area.

Golden provides a plethora of educational opportunities for Mines students, as well, with the world-famous Coors Brewery, CoorsTek, the United States Geological Survey, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory making up just a few of the major STEM-focused employers in the city. Nearby Denver is world-renowned as a technology, aerospace, telecom, petroleum, and mining hub.
