GOLDEN – Sophomore Trevor Wages came off the bench to pull down a career-high 17 rebounds and notch his fourth-career double-double to lead the No. 7 Colorado Mines men's basketball squad to an 86-57 thumping of UC-Colorado Springs on Friday evening at Lockridge Arena in Golden.
Mines (6-0, 2-0 RMAC) used a staunch 45-to-30 rebounding margin – including 17 offensive boards – to hold down a 19-to-7 advantage on second-chance points during the contest. The Mountain Lions (1-8, 0-3 RMAC) were able to record 25 bench points on the evening, but CSM nearly doubled them up with 46 points from players off the bench.
Wages, Dale Minschwaner and Trevor Ritchie combined for 42 points on the night and paved the way for a big 38-to-22 advantage on points in the paint during the matchup. Minschwaner finished 4-of-7 from the field and 8-of-12 from the foul line to garner 16 points in 25 minutes of action. Ritchie came off the bench to score 16 of his own on 6-of-9 shooting from the field to go along with four rebounds and three assists.
Wages posted 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting for the fourth double-double of his young career with eight of his game-high 17 rebounds coming on the offensive end. He also added two blocks in 20 minutes on the court.
Brian Muller also came off the bench to record 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting despite an uncharacteristic 1-of-6 effort from downtown.
UCCS put three players in double figures, led by George Pollard, who tallied a team-high 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor.
The Orediggers will close out their weekend doubleheader on Saturday when they host CSU-Pueblo at Lockridge Arena in Golden. Tip-off will follow the conclusion of the women's game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
