GOLDEN – The Colorado School of Mines men's basketball team will open up the home portion of its conference schedule this weekend by hosting Chadron State and Black Hills State on Friday and Saturday, respectively, at Lockridge Arena in Golden.
Both games will begin at approximately 7 p.m. following completion of the women's games which are both scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
Mines (4-2) opened up the RMAC schedule last weekend with a 1-1 record, including a 77-66 loss to Western New Mexico on Friday and an 89-84 overtime victory over New Mexico Highlands on Saturday.
Sophomore Brian Muller led the offense with an average of 23.5 points per game, including a 25-point effort in Saturday's win over the Cowboys. He tied a school record for free throw percentage in a game against the Cowboys with a 14-for-14 effort from the charity stripe, and joins Kyle Pape (12-for-12, Colorado Christian, Jan. 18, 2008) and Sam Handsborough (12-for-12, Chadron State, Feb. 21, 1998) in the Mines' record books.
The Billings, Mont., native currently leads the RMAC in points per game (20.8) and sits second in free throw percentage (91.7 percent).
Also in Saturday's win, junior Trevor Wages recorded a 30-point, 11-rebound double-double to become the first Mines' player to score 30 points in a game since All-American Sean Armstrong on January 3, 2011, against Western New Mexico. Wages averaged 17.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game during the two-game stretch last week. He leads the RMAC in rebounding with an average of 10.2 rebounds per contest, is tied for fourth in the RMAC with an average of 17.8 points per game and is third in the conference and leads the team with a 66.7 shooting percentage on the season.
Junior Luke Meisch added 13.5 points per game in addition to 8.5 rebounds per contest, including a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double against NMHU. He is third on the team with an average of 12.7 points per game and is fourth in the RMAC with an average of 8.3 rebounds per game.
Nico Mucci is fourth on the squad with an average of 9.3 points per contest and Trey Winbush is fifth with an average of 7.2 points per game.
Chadron State (0-6, 0-2 RMAC) opened conference play last weekend with a 77-62 loss to Colorado Mesa on Friday before falling to Western State on Saturday by a score of 69-66.
Zac Bargen, son of head coach Brent Bargen, leads the team with an average of 18.2 points per contest as the only member of the team averaging double figures for scoring on the season. He also leads the team in 3-pointers made (13) as well as rebounds per game (5.8), while Grant Stone averages 9.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest.
Black Hills State (1-5, 0-2 RMAC) is also still looking for its first conference win after opening last weekend with a 93-89 double-overtime loss to Western State on Friday in its first-ever RMAC men's basketball contest. The squad then fell to Colorado Mesa by an 86-72 final.
Tanner Adler leads the team with an average of 16.5 points per game, while Austin Maag follows with an average of 16.2 points per contest. Joey Mitchell and Brady Bisgaard follow with averages of 12.5 and 10.0 points per game, respectively, to account for all players averaging in double figures for scoring.
