Oredigger bats cold as New Mexico Highlands sweeps on Saturday

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The Colorado School of Mines softball team came into its weekend series against N.M. Highlands averaging over six runs a game but managed just four total in two games dropping a pair in the first weekend of RMAC action, 5-4 and 4-0.

The Cowgirls committed five errors in game one and Mines left eight runners on base unable to capitalize in the late innings trailing by just a single run. 

NMHU scored three runs in the second to take the early lead. CSM finally got on the board in the fifth inning with an RBI double by Sami Springer.

N.M. Highlands added a single run in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead but the Orediggers pulled within a run scoring two in the top of the sixth inning. Lauren Aberle hit a sacrifice fly and Molly Thiebaut scored as a result of an error.

Mines would tie the game in the top of the seventh on a bunt by Sarah Lustgraaf that drove in a run. Tied at four, the Cowgirls managed a two-out walk off single to win game one.

Thiebaut was 2-for-4 with a run scored as Kelly Unkrich took the loss dropping to 2-5 on the season.

The Orediggers got a hit each from Macy Jones and Thiebaut as NMHU's Erica Wieck pitched a shutout with five strikeouts. Mines' Ashley Goletz allowed four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts as she dropped to 1-5 on the season.

Colorado School of Mines (3-10, 0-2 RMAC) and N.M. Highlands play a doubleheader again tomorrow Sunday, Feb. 26 beginning at 11:00 am.
