KEARNEY, Neb. - The Colorado School of Mines softball team bounced back after dropping a pair of 2-1 contests on Saturday. Mines scored 10 runs on 14 hits in game one winning 10-5 and finished off the weekend behind a shutout performance by Ashley Goletz winning 6-0.
Unlike Saturday it was the Lopers who got the board first scoring a single run in the first inning on an RBI single.
Mines answered with a six-run third inning manfacturing runs with five straight singles. Springer drove in one and Vessey two more. Sarah Lustgraaf capped off the inning with a three-run shot to make it 6-1 in favor of the Orediggers.
An RBI single in the fourth by Macy Jones and another by Stephanie Runia in the fifth extended Mines' lead to 8-1. The Orediggers scored two more in the sixth one on a sacrifice fly by Vessey and another as a result of a wild pitch to make it 10-1.
The Lopers made things interesting scoring four runs in the sixth inning to make it 10-5 but did not cut into the deficit any further.
Allysia Cisneros was perfect at the play going 4-for-4 while scoring twice. Jones finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Vessey and Lustgraaf finished with three RBI each. Kelly Unkrich picked up the win going 6 2/3 innings as she allowed just one run on eight hits with five strikeouts.
In game two it was the Orediggers who jumped out to the the early 1-0 lead using a double steal to score as Jones stole home.
Mines scored a pair of runs in both the fourth and the fifth innings to pad its lead. Lustgraaf scored on an error in the fourth and Molly Thiebaut on a wild pitch. In the fifth it was the bat of Vessey as she hit her 11th home run of the season to make it 5-0.
Pinch hitter Gianna Duncan drove in the sixth run with an RBI single in the seventh scoring Lauren Aberle.
Goletz tossed her second shutout of the season allowing just three hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk. Vessey finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Orediggers (11-18, 8-10 RMAC) return home next weekened to host Black Hills State beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 24 at 12:00 pm.
