Power hitting on display as Mines takes two from Black Hills State

GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines softball team scored 22 runs in two games against Black Hills State taking game one by a score of 13-5 in six innings and finishing off game two, 9-1, in five innings.

Mines blew the game wide open with an eight-run second inning in game one. Cassie Ford was hit by a pitch and both Paige Coufal and Morgan Anderson drew walks to load the bases. Macy Jones cleared the bases on the first pitch of her at bat with a grand slam. Sami Springer followed with a solo shot, her second home run of the season. An error on the Black Hills State third baseman allowed another run to score while Ford finished off the inning with her first career home run, a two run shot.

Jones doubled in the third scoring another run and the Orediggers scored three times in the fourth courtesy of an Allysia Cisneros three-run triple. The Yellow Jackets scored two in the top half of the fourth and added three more in the fifth to extend the game making it 12-5.

In the bottom of the sixth, a walk by Alyson Beck and back-to-back singles by Stephanie Runia and Lauren Aberle loaded the bases. Gianna Duncan ended the game with an RBI single to give Mines the win.

Kelly Unkrich improved to 7-10 on the season as she pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts and a walk.

Jones was 2-for-4 with a run scored, five RBI and a grand slam. Ford was 1-for-1 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Once again the Orediggers used a big inning in game two to grab the win scoring seven runs in the third.

Mines opened the scoring in the first inning with a sacrifice fly by Molly Thiebaut and an RBI single off the bat of Ford.

Kamee Vessey took advantage of a Black Hills State miscue scoring from third to begin the Orediggers seven-run third inning. Back-to-back singles by Coufal (two RBI) and Anderson (RBI) drove in three more runs. Jones capped off the inning with her second home run of the day and her third of the season this time a three-run shot.

Ashley Goletz was solid through five innings of work allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts.

Jones was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored in game two while Ford and Anderson were both 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Sarah Lustgraaf was also 2-for-2 in the game with a run scored.

The Orediggers (13-18, 10-10 RMAC) will closeout the weekend with a doubleheader against Black Hills State tomorrow, Sunday, March 25 beginning at 11:00 am.
