DENVER – The Colorado School of Mines softball team held off a late rally in game two following its own heroics in game one to capture a four-game series and Sunday doubleheader sweep over Metro State on Sunday afternoon at Auraria Field in Denver.

The Orediggers (19-18, 16-10 RMAC) took game one by a 6-3 final score and held of a seventh-inning run by Metro State (16-22, 13-13 RMAC) to capture a 5-4 victory in the series finale. Mines has now won 14 of its last 17 games, including a current 10 game winning streak. The squad has not lost since suffering a pair of losses in the first two games of a doubleheader at Nebraska-Kearney on March 17. The four-game RMAC series sweep was the first for the Roadrunners in school history.

A scoreless game was broken up in the top of the third inning when a two-out single by Allysia Cisneros got a runner aboard before and an error by the Metro State third baseman in Macy Jones' at-bat turned into the three-base variety – pushing Cisneros all the way around from first.

The Roadrunners quickly tied up the game at 1-1 in the home half of the frame and the game would not see another run score until the top of the sixth inning. Junior shortstop Molly Thiebaut then slugged her fifth homer of the season, this time to straight-away center, to give Mines a 2-1 lead.

After holding Metro State scoreless in the home half of the sixth, Mines erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh behind a pair of two-run dingers by Jones and Sarah Lustgraaf that put Mines up 6-1.

A leadoff double by Metro State quickly turned into two runs, but Preseason RMAC Pitcher of the Year Kelly Unkrich closed down the rally and preserved the 6-3 win.

The junior hurler improved to 11-10 overall on the season after scattering eight hits and three runs over seven innings while striking out four batters.

Jones finished 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with two RBI and a run scored, Lustgraaf added a 1-for-3 line with a run scored and two RBI and Thibaut scored once and drove in one on a 2-for-4 day at the dish.

After mounting a 5-0 lead through five innings, the Orediggers were forced to hold off seventh-inning rally in game two after Metro State scored four runs in the frame. Unkrich was brought in the close out the door for fellow junior Ashley Goletz and got final out for her second save of the season.

Goletz allowed seven hits and three earned runs over 6-2/3 innings with six strikeouts for her eighth win of the year.

Kamee Vessey led the offense with a 2-for-3 line with two RBI and a run scored. Thiebaut added another 2-for-3 effort with one RBI and a run scored and Sami Springer posted a pair of singles on 2-for-5 hitting.

Mines will return to action when it hosts Regis in a pair of doubleheaders on April 6-7 in Golden. The series opener on Friday will begin at noon.
