Mines Posts Saturday Sweep Over Mustangs

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Colorado School of Mines softball team opened up its four-game series with Western New Mexico by posting a Saturday sweep after earning a 5-3 victory in the first game and an 11-3 victory in six innings in the second.

The Orediggers (23-20, 20-12 RMAC) have now won 14 of their last 16 ballgames, and moved into third place in the conference standings with the pair of victories – moving ahead of Colorado Mesa.

Mines took the victory in game one after posting a four-run top of the sixth inning and holding off a Mustang comeback in the bottom of the inning after the WNMU scored three runs of its own. Mines took advantage of three Mustang errors during the contest as well.

Kelly Unkrich captured her 12th victory of the season after allowing just three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over the full seven innings.

Catcher Sami Springer led the offense with a 2-for-4 effort with a run scored, while Kamee Vessey, Sarah Lustgraaf, Molly Thiebaut, Paige Coufal and Morgan Anderson each added a hit with Lustgraaf, Cassie Ford, Coufal and Anderson adding an RBI.

The Orediggers made quick work in capturing the win in game two after posting 16 hits and 11 runs offensively while Ashley Goletz limited the Mustang offense to just seven hits and three runs over six innings. The junior hurler also struck out seven batters in capturing a complete-game victory.

Thiebaut led the offense with two RBI and a run scored on 3-for-4 batting while Anderson added her own 3-for-4 line with two runs scored. Macy Jones, Vessey and Springer contributed two hits of their own with Jones adding two RBI and Lustgraaf adding three RBI on 1-for-3 batting.

Lustgraaf, Cassie Ford and Couful each hit home runs in the contest.

The two teams will close out their series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.
