GOLDEN – After going hit-for-hit with No. 11 Colorado Mesa during the first game, the Colorado School of Mines baseball team was only able to generate one run on four hits in falling to the Mavericks by an 8-1 final in the second game of Friday's doubleheader at Jim Darden Field in Golden.
The Orediggers (14-28, 13-25 RMAC) scored their only run on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Phan Thornton that scored leadoff man Bobby Egeberg after he led off the inning with a triple.
The scoring would be non-existent the rest of the way as Mines was only able to record three more hits off Colorado Mesa (38-10, 32-6 RMAC) starter Jared Christensen.
Egeberg finished 1-for-2 with a run scored to lead the offense while Garrett Schirmacher, Brett Olsson and Jordan Williams each added a hit of their own.
Blake Dunham took the loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits over the full seven innings. He struck out seven batters and walked just one.
The Orediggers now hold just a one-game lead over Metro State for the sixth and final spot in the upcoming RMAC Baseball Tournament. The Roadrunners split their doubleheader with CSU-Pueblo on Friday.
Mines and CMU will close out their regular seasons tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
