ALAMOSA – Visiting Colorado School of Mines shot just 36.6 percent from the field, including 23.8 percent in a 22-point first half, in falling to No. 18 Adams State by a 67-58 final on Friday evening at Plachy Hall in Alamosa.
Mines (10-6, 7-5 RMAC) and Adams State (13-2, 11-1 RMAC) combined for 37 fouls and 31 turnovers and both were held under 40 percent shooting during the contest.
In addition to the tough shooting night, the Orediggers were doomed by mistakes after accounting for 20 turnovers during the game while being out-rebounded by a 38-to-29 margin.
The Orediggers opened up the contest with a 10-4 lead through the first 6:30 of the contest, capped off by an old-fashioned 3-point play by Cesar Mapeli, but that lead would be erased over the next four minutes before ASU took its first lead of the game, 12-11, with 10:23 to go in the first half.
A pair of free throws by Luke Meisch with 8:30 to play before the break put Mines back ahead 13-12, but a jumper by John Jackson with 7:22 showing on the clock gave the Grizzlies a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Meisch led the squad with 20 points on a 3-of-5 shooting effort, including a 2-of-4 mark from the perimeter. The Wichita, Kan., product recorded the fifth 20-point performance of the season largely behind a 12-of-15 effort from the charity stripe.
Sophomore Brian Muller was the only other member of the squad in double figures with 13 points on a 4-of-12 shooting line, including a 3-of-8 mark from the perimeter.
Trevor Wages added nine points and seven rebounds, while Nico Mucci added seven points and Bryant Elrick, Ruben Jackson and Mapeli added three points apiece.
Mines will face its second nationally-ranked opponent in as many nights tomorrow when the team squares off against No. 20 Fort Lewis (13-2, 10-2 RMAC) at Whalen Gymnasium in Durango at 7:30 p.m.
