ALAMOSA – Led by 21 kills from freshman Alanna Winfield, the No. 18 Colorado School of Mines volleyball team topped home-standing Adams State by a 3-2 final on Friday evening at Plachy Hall in Alamosa.
Mines (13-4, 7-1 RMAC) defeated Adams State (6-9, 4-3 RMAC) in five games for the second-consecutive season behind scores of 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 22-25 and 15-7.
Winfield notched her 21 kills on a .381 attack percentage while junior Sarah Pekarek added 18 kills, two service aces and an assist on a .222 hitting clip.
Winfield added three blocks and Pekarek posted nine digs and two block defensively as well.
One day after being held in single digits for kills, senior All-American Melanie Wannamaker got back into the groove with 14 kills, three aces and two blocks on Friday evening.
Sophomore Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood finished with 50 assists, 10 digs and two blocks against the Grizzlies for her ninth double-double of the season and her fourth in the last four contests.
Senior Hannah Margheim led the back line with 17 digs while also adding five assists and a service ace on Friday. Already second on the career digs chart and one of two members of Mines' 1,500 Dig Club, Margheim inched closer to the 300-dig plateau with 282 on the season.
She needs 154 digs to tie Sarah Alsbrooks (2002-05) for the most in program history during the NCAA Division II era.
Mines will return to action on Saturday with a 6 p.m. matchup against Western State in Gunnison to close out a three-match road trip.
