FORT COLLINS – In the first of two exhibition games to start the 2013-14 women's basketball campaign, Colorado School of Mines fell 95-47 to Division I Colorado State Monday evening at Moby Arena in Fort Collins.
Colorado State, voted No. 7 in the Mountain West Preseason Media Poll, established a quick 11-0 lead 4:19 after the opening tip and carried a 32-point advantage into the half with a 23-0 run, holding Mines scoreless for a span of 5:40.
The Rams backed up 47.2 percent (17-of-36) first half shooting with a 50 percent clip in the second, including 7-of-17 three-pointers, finishing 34-of-70 overall (.486) and 12-of-31 (.387) outside the arc. CSU held a 33-5 advantage in points off turnovers and controlled the interior, compiling a 40-12 points in the paint margin.
Senior Courtney Gallo boasted a game-high 19 points, shooting 7-of-13 and 5-of-9 from distance to lead the Orediggers. Making her collegiate debut, Laura Tyree tallied 10 points and the senior inside tandem of Tory Langas and Allie Grazulis combined for 14.
AJ Newton led four Rams in double figures with 18 points, lining 5-of-8 triples. Elin Gustavsson posted 17 on 7-of-11 field goals; Caitlin Duffy had 15 and Ellen Newton 14.
Mines has one more tune up before the season-opener on Nov. 15, traveling north for a 7 p.m. tipoff Saturday, Nov. 2 against Division I Colorado at Coors Events Center in Boulder.
