Men's Soccer Sweeps Season Series With ThunderWolves

PUEBLO – Supported by first half scores from senior Tesho Akindele, Colorado School of Mines men's soccer won its second straight away from home, completing the season sweep against Colorado State-Pueblo, 2-1, on Friday evening at the Rawlings Soccer Complex.

Akindele provided the initial lead 6:42 into the match, directing a free kick to the upper, left corner.

Under 16 minutes later at 22:26, Akindele then converted a pass to the top of the box from sophomore Chayce Moniz with the eventual deciding score, his RMAC-leading eighth goal this season and 15th career multi-goal effort.

Also the conference leader in points (20), assists (4) and game-winners (4), Akindele began the week ranked eighth in nationally in points, 16th in goals and 19th in assists. The Thornton native continues to pace Division II active career leaders with 158 points, 65 scores and 28 helpers.

A foul inside the 18-yarder and resulting successful penalty kick attempt by Colorado State-Pueblo's Jonny Sawyer with 11:37 remaining brought the match to its closing total.

Mines (6-1-1, 4-1-0 RMAC) finished with a 16-12 margin on shots and had four players place a shot on target, including Akindele with two and Moniz, senior Alex Gunberg and junior Tannor Randle with one each.

Senior Colin Baker turned aside one of two shots in the 90 minutes, improving to 6-1-1 in net.  

The men begin a three-game homestand at 2 p.m. Sunday against NSCAA No. 24 Metro State (5-1-3, 3-0-2 RMAC).
