GOLDEN – Led by 23 combined kills from senior Melanie Wannamaker and freshman Alanna Winfield, the No. 15 Colorado School of Mines volleyball team clinched at least a share of the 2013 RMAC Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 victory over visiting Regis on Friday at Lockridge Arena.
Set scores for the match were 26-24, 25-20 and 25-22.
Mines (21-4, 15-1 RMAC) now needs just one more victory over its final three contests to win the title in outright fashion. This is the second conference title in as many seasons for the Orediggers, who also extended their program record win streak to 14 matches in the victory.
Mines has now captured wins in 21 of its last 22 matches, with the lone loss coming at the hands of Metro State on Sept. 27 in Denver. The Orediggers will welcome the Roadrunners to Lockridge Arena on Saturday.
The sweep of the Rangers (15-10, 11-5 RMAC) on Friday was Mines' 13th straight-set victory of the season and its fourth over the past six matches.
Wannamaker led the squad with 12 kills on a .308 attack percentage for her 24th match of the season with 10 or more kills. The reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week added three blocks on the defensive end to move into sole possession of fifth place in Mines' all-time block charts.
Winfield added 11 kills on a team-high .357 attack percentage while adding a trio of blocks of on the defensive side.
Junior Sarah Pekarek and freshman Samantha Fischer each added eight kills, with Fischer knocking hers down on a .333 attack percentage in addition to a team-high four blocks defensively.
Pekarek's 10 digs in the win over Regis marked her 13th match of the season in double figures for the category.
Sophomore Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood added 36 assists, a pair of blocks and 10 digs for her 14th double-double of the season and the 28th of her career.
Senior Hannah Margheim led the team with 17 digs and added two assists offensively.
With its magic number at one, Mines will attempt to capture the conference title in outright fashion against Metro State on Saturday. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
