No. 16 Volleyball Places Three On AVCA All-Region Squad; Winfield Named Region Freshman Of The Year

LEXINGTON, Ky.Melanie Wannamaker, Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood and Alanna Winfield of the No. 16 Colorado School of Mines volleyball team continued to add more season laurels on Wednesday after being named to the 2013 AVCA All-South Central Region Team, as released by the association. 

The trio took three of the 14 spots on the team, while Winfield was named the Region Freshman of the Year – the first such award for the Mines volleyball program.

Wannamaker currently sits third nationally with a .394 attack percentage – well ahead of her program-record mark of .355 set last year. The senior co-captain is also sixth nationally with an average of 4.47 kills per set and fourth nationally with 5.22 points per set. 

A First Team All-RMAC selection and RMAC All-Tournament Team member, Wannamaker has posted 10 or more kills in 29 of 30 matches for the Orediggers this season, including seven matches with 20 or more kills. A Preseason All-RMAC selection, the Kingwood, Texas, native, also earned RMAC Offensive Player of the Week honors on five occasions during the 2013 campaign and earned a spot on the Oredigger Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team.

She was also named the Daktronics South Central Region Player of the Year in addition to earning First Team Daktronics All-Region laurels.

Johnson-Hazlewood, already the program's single-season assist record holder, currently sits third in the nation with an average of 12.81 assists per set. She was named the RMAC Setter of the Year after earning RMAC Setter of the Week honors on five occasions during the 2013 campaign. The Cypress, Texas native posted 40 or more assists in 24 of Mines' 30 matches this season, including 12 matches with 50-plus assists and four matches with 60-plus assists for the sophomore. 

The First Team All-RMAC selection has also posted 18 double-doubles on the season to lead the team with an average of 3.10 digs per set. She was named Second Team All-RMAC and AVCA Honorable Mention All-Region last year and was named First Team Daktronics All-Region this week as well. Additionally, she earned MVP honors at the 2013 Oredigger Volleyball Classic Tournament earlier this season.

Winfield, a Houston, Texas, native, sits second on the team with 399 kills at an average of 3.66 kills per set which places her fifth in the conference. Also the RMAC Freshman of the Year and a Second Team All-RMAC selection, Winfield has posted double-figure kill totals in 24 of 30 matches for the Orediggers, including two matches with 20-plus kills.

She was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on one occasion during the 2013 campaign and earned a spot on the Oredigger Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team.
