GOLDEN – Led by senior provisional qualifier Kayla Johnson, the Colorado School of Mines pentathletes and heptathletes kicked off the 2013-14 indoor track and field season Thursday and Friday with the Orediggers Early Bird Multi at Steinhauer Fieldhouse.

With three top-five results in five events, Johnson earned her first career NCAA qualifying score in the pentathlon, ranking ahead of three Division I competitors in fifth place with an altitude-adjusted total of 3229.

Johnson claimed fourth out of the 15 competitors in the shot put with a distance of 33-3.0 (10.13 meters) and crossed fourth in the 800 in 2:30.27. She was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.54.

One of only two women's individual qualifiers thus far in the young season, her Provisional was the third achieved across all events in Division II and first in the pentathlon.

Freshman Amanda Giles debuted 10th with a 2790 total, taking seventh in the 800 (2:31.89), eighth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.80) and 10th in the shot put (28-7.75; 8.73m).

Sophomore Dallas Hall scored sixth out of eight in the heptathlon with a personal-best of 3616.

Hall had three seventh place marks before running away with the win in the 1000 on Friday in a time of 2:51.04, nearly 18 seconds faster than the runner-up.

The Orediggers are in action once more this calendar year as the teams compete in the Air Force Holiday Open at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13 at Cadet Field House in Colorado Springs.
