DENVER – Junior Courtney Derus tallied a season-high four RBI and the NFCA No. 12 Colorado School of Mines softball team rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to defeat Regis 11-5 Saturday in Denver at Metro State's Auraria Field.
Derus reached base four times, finishing 3-for-3 with two of the Orediggers' seven hits in the decisive seven-run fifth inning, including a bases clearing triple down the opposite field chalk. She also had a leadoff, solo home run in the bottom of the third and a walk in the first.
Sophomore Cassie Ford was also perfect at the plate, driving in three and scoring twice on 2-for-2 hitting with two walks and a two-run homer to left center in the sixth.
Sophomore Paige Coufal added her first long ball of the season, a two-out solo shot to left field in the second to bring Mines within 4-2.
In total, seven Orediggers collected a base hit and scored a run with seniors Kamee Vessey and Molly Thiebaut also plating one.
Mines (18-2-1, 9-0 RMAC) only outhit Regis 10-to-8, but had advantages of 5-1 in extra-base hits and 6-to-3 in free passes.
Despite facing the early 4-0 hole, senior Kelly Unkrich moved to 12-0 on the rubber, going the distance for the 12th straight game, scattering three earned runs on eight hits and three walks, while striking out six. She retired 12 of 14 Rangers between the third and sixth frames, including four on swing-and-miss strikeouts.
