GOLDEN – Visiting Colorado Mesa pulled off a doubleheader sweep over the Colorado School of Mines baseball team with a 17-1 win in Saturday's second game at Jim Darden Field in Golden.
Mines (5-12, 2-7 RMAC) was tagged for 18 hits by the Mavericks (15-4, 9-0 RMAC) for the second-straight game, and the squad was forced to use six pitchers over the seven-inning contest.
Nate Olinger (0-1) took the loss after allowing nine runs (eight earned) over 2.1 innings in the first start of his career, but also led the team on offense with a 3-for-4 batting line, including an RBI-double in the bottom of the seventh for the Orediggers' lone run.
Kyle Wallace added his second-consecutive 2-for-4 effort while Garrett Schirmacher finished 1-for-2 off the bench.
Freshman Jack Bevan recorded his first collegiate hit in his lone at-bat and scored Mines' only run when Olinger doubled him in from second in the seventh frame.
The four-game series will come to a close tomorrow with Sunday's finale which will begin at noon.
