GRAND JUNCTION – The Colorado School of Mines baseball team closed out its action on Friday against No. 4 Colorado Mesa with a 7-0 loss in the second game of the day's doubleheader at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction.
The Orediggers (21-23, 16-18 RMAC), who saw their seven-game winning streak snapped in the first game of the day, were limited to just two hits during the contest.
CMU (39-7, 33-3 RMAC) hurler Matt Williams struck out eight and walked just one over a two-hit, six-inning start to improve to 7-1 overall.
Junior Peter Herrin (0-2) took the loss after allowing six earned runs on six hits over five innings. He struck out four batters but was hurt by five walks during his 94-pitch outing.
Seniors Bobby Egeberg and Jordan Williams led the team at the plate with a pair of 1-for-3 batting lines.
The Mavericks took a lead in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs and added two in the fourth and fifth frames to take a 6-0 lead before adding another in the seventh to bring the score to its final at 7-0.
The series will continue on Saturday with another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
