GOLDEN – Senior Tyler Curtis and junior Kayla Johnson both recorded championship wins and the Colorado School of Mines track and field teams totaled 10 all-conference selections on Monday at the 2013 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Golden.
Curtis, the reigning RMAC Track Athlete of the Week, outkicked Kirk Harvey of Metro State over the last 50 meters of the 3000-meter steeplechase to a time of 9:21.09 for First Team All-RMAC honors and his first career conference championship.
Johnson earned her first collegiate RMAC title in the triple jump, taking First Team All-RMAC distinction with a distance of 37-08.00 (11.48 meters). Immediately following the winning jump, she ran 16.00 in the preliminaries of the 100 hurdles, qualifying for Tuesday's finals in seventh place. Senior Erin Beach had the fifth-fastest qualifying time, crossing the line in 15.40.
Beach and Johnson capped Second Team All-RMAC heptathlon performances in the morning, finishing 3-4 with respective totals of 4251 and 4238. Beach was inside the top-three in five of the seven events, including a win in the 100 hurdles, while Johnson won the 800 and took second in the long jump.
Sophomore Seun Ogunmodede earned his first outdoor NCAA Provisional qualifying result, taking runner-up and First Team All-RMAC laurels in the triple jump behind a Division II top-20 and school record distance of 48-10.75 (14.90 meters).
Senior Bailey Hoover broke her record in the hammer throw for the second time this season, placing second and claiming First Team All-RMAC with a heave of 162-04 (49.48 meters).
Sophomore Nicolo Redfern and freshman Jacob Hollister threw their first collegiate All-RMAC marks in the hammer as First Teamer Redfern was runner-up with a personal-record of 158-02 (48.20 meters) and Hollister took fifth and Third Team praise with a distance of 155-04 (47.36 meters).
In the opening running event of the meet, red-shirt freshman Joe Bourgeois clocked a fourth-place time of 33:06.85 in the 10,000 for Second Team All-RMAC accords. Sophomore Cody Foster beat senior Rick Davey (33:29.67) to the line in a personal-record and sixth-place time of 33:27.45, staking Third Team All-RMAC merit.
Senior Hannah Cooling scored team points in the women's race, ranking seventh in 39:53.75.
Sophomore Michelle Rigsby also added to the team score, achieving seventh overall and a personal-record of 36-04.25 (11.08 meters) in the triple jump. She clocked a collegiate-best and the program's No. 3 time in the 100 prelims in 12.88, falling just 12 hundredths shy of the ninth and final qualifying position.
Senior Matt Schroeder became only the third Oredigger to surpass 5600 in the decathlon, scoring 5631 with four top-four results, including wins in the 100 and shot put for seventh overall out of 12.
The championships conclude Tuesday at Stermole Track & Field Complex/Crouch Field Events Complex, beginning with the men's javelin at 8 a.m. Track events start at 11 a.m. with the men's 4x100 relay.
