GOLDEN – Led by 16 kills from freshman Alanna Winfield, the No. 19 Colorado School of Mines volleyball team posted its second-straight win on Friday with a 3-0 win over Western Oregon in its initial action at the Oredigger Volleyball Classic at Lockridge Arena.
Mines (2-3) captured the 3-0 win behind game scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-15.
Winfield recorded her 16 kills on just 20 attacks – good for a .800 attack percentage during the match which sets a new program mark for attack percentage on 20 or more attempts. Her .800 mark tops the mark of .636 set by former All-American and current student assistant coach Jackie Stabell.
As a squad, the Orediggers posted a .330 attack percentage, while the defense held WOU (3-3) to a .179 hitting mark.
Senior Melanie Wannamaker continued her torrid pace with 13 kills and a .426 attack percentage.
Junior Sarah Pekarek added 10 kills and 11 digs for her third double-double in five matches, while Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood added 42 assists and eight digs of her own.
Senior Hannah Margheim added 21 digs and a pair of assists as well during the match.
Mines effeciently and effectively killed WOU's rallies all night after averaging a 78 percent sideout rate over the match, including a staggering 86 percent in the 25-15 win in game three.
