DENVER – A hot-shooting Metro State offense and an 18-point halftime deficit were too much to overcome for Colorado School of Mines women's basketball Saturday as the Orediggers fell 78-48 at the Auraria Event Center in Denver.
Bolstered by a school-record 73.1 percent (19-of-26) from the floor in the first half, including 7-of-10 behind the arc, Metro State (5-8, 4-5 RMAC) ended the evening 30-of-54 (.556) with 9-of-19 (.464) makes from three in earning its 11th straight home win against the Orediggers.
Senior Allie Grazulis earned her fifth straight double-double, leading Mines (3-10, 2-7 RMAC) with 14 points and game-high 11 rebounds – her eighth consecutive game of 10 or more on the glass and ninth in the past 10.
Sophomore Courtney Martin had 10 and junior Taylor Helbig eight off the bench.
The Orediggers shot a season-low 27.5 percent (14-of-51) on the way to their fewest points since a 62-46 loss to Colorado Christian in the 2012-13 regular season finale.
Following a 1-of-5 start with four turnovers in the first 4:54, the Orediggers closed a 16-3 deficit to four with an 11-2 spurt, punctuated by a corner three by junior Sam Rusk with 11:01 on the clock.
Metro State twice went back ahead 10 over the ensuing 2:51. Mines got within four, 28-24, on a three-point play from Helbig; however, the Roadrunners ended the final 5:57 on a 16-5 run to enter the half in front 47-29.
The women remain away from home both games next weekend, beginning with a 5:30 p.m. tip Friday, Jan. 17 at UC-Colorado Springs.
