COLORADO SPRINGS – Senior Allie Grazulis completed an old-fashioned three-point play with 12 seconds remaining and Colorado School of Mines women's basketball snapped a four-game skid with a down-to-the-wire 55-54 road win Friday over UC-Colorado Springs at the Gallogly Events Center.
Holding a 52-48 lead with 1:44 to play thanks to redshirt senior Katie Clements' first three-pointer, Mines (4-10, 3-7 RMAC) fell behind 54-52 as UCCS strung together six unanswered points.
After an Oredigger timeout with 18 seconds on the clock, Grazulis followed with the play of the evening, connecting on a contested jumper in the lane and tying her season-high with her eighth make at the stripe.
Jeri Pikul's desperation three-point try as time expired was too strong as Mines handed the Mountain Lions (5-9, 4-6 RMAC) their first loss at home since an 85-76 setback to Bemidji State in the season-opener on Nov. 15.
Grazulis had a season-best 22 points behind 7-of-11 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws with seven rebounds to pace the Orediggers.
Freshman Laura Tyree had 10 points in first collegiate start, and junior Taylor Helbig and sophomore Courtney Martin each added eight off the bench.
Mines finished the night 20-of-50 (.400) and 10-of-13 (.769) on free throws, while limiting UCCS to 39.6 percent (19-of-48) overall, including a season-low tying 1-of-11 (.091) on threes.
Abby Kirchoff, fourth in Division II at 23.5 points per game entering Friday, was the only Mountain Lion in double figures with a game-high 24.
The women go for two in a row at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow against current RMAC runner-up Colorado State-Pueblo at Massari Arena in Pueblo.
