BOULDER – Colorado School of Mines track and field returned to competition this weekend with a bang, opening 2014 with seven combined wins and two NCAA provisional times Friday and Saturday at Colorado's Potts Indoor Invitational at Balch Fieldhouse in Boulder.
Junior Garrett Hoch earned his second win in as many meets with a provisional 1:54.89 in the 800, while freshman Patrick Weaver timed his first collegiate qualifying mark, taking runner-up in 1:55.97. Junior Kodi Burns was fourth in 2:02.63.
Sophomores McKenzie Zeman and Ian Rozier led a Mines sweep of the 400 as Zeman crossed in a personal-best 59.11 and Rozier in 50.38. Sophomore Austin Shaffer followed in third (51.09), freshman Matthew Drotar in fourth (52.01) and freshman Michael Lanahan in fifth (52.07) to round out four Orediggers in the top-five in the men's race.
Zeman added a second win and personal-record in the 200, stopping the clock in 26.36.
Rozier, Hoch, Shaffer and Weaver came together for win in the 4x400 in a time of 3:25.40.
Junior Ben Timmer won the pole vault in his season-debut with a height of 14-9.00 (4.50m).
Senior Kayla Johnson had a team-best three top-five efforts, including first place in the triple jump behind a distance of 36-5.00 (11.10m). The Littleton, Colo. native added fourth place in the 60-meter hurdles (9.54) and fifth in the long jump (16-5.00; 5.00m).
Junior Michelle Rigsby finished runner-up in the triple jump (35-6.50; 10.83m) and took third in the long jump with a personal-best 17-8.00 (5.38m). Junior counterpart Marc Leachman was second on the men's side in the triple jump (37-10.00; 11.53m) and fifth in the long jump (19-9.00; 6.02m), while sophomore James Lewis claimed third in the long jump at 21-0.50 (6.41m).
Senior Casie Ratzlaff posted third in the shot put with a throw of 37-1.25 (11.31m) and sat fourth in the weight throw, spinning 47-11.00 (14.60m).
The men ranked 3-4-5 in the weight throw as senior Ryan Ewen threw 54-1.25 (16.49m), senior Nicolo Redfern 49-1.00 (14.96m) and sophomore Jacob Hollister 48-6.25 (14.79m).
Sophomore Jace Warren was third in the shot put at 45-2.25 (13.77m).
The Orediggers return to Colorado Springs for the second time next week, taking part in the three-day Air Force Invitational at Cadet Field House, beginning at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23.
