GOLDEN – Visiting Adams State shot 55.6 percent from the floor and forced 20 turnovers to hand the No. 11 Colorado School of Mines basketball team an 89-75 defeat on Friday evening at Lockridge Arena in Golden.
The loss was the first at home this season for the Orediggers (14-2, 10-2 RMAC), who have now lost two of their last four contests after starting the season with a program-record 12 consecutive victories.
Mines shot just 39.2 percent from the field and just 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from the perimeter in the loss. Despite another stellar effort at the foul line (33-of-43), Mines was unable to overcome a 44-to-26 advantage by Adams State (9-6, 6-6 RMAC) in the paint and 20 turnovers, which ASU converted to 28 points.
Senior Trevor Wages led three players in double figures with 17 points on a 6-of-8 shooting effort. The Littleton native captured his ninth double-double of the season with 13 rebounds as well in 28 minutes. The reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week has now recorded a double-double in three of Mines' last five contests.
Junior Brian Muller added 15 points, mostly coming on a perfect 10-for-10 performance at the foul line. He finished 2-of-8 from the field and 1-of-4 from the perimeter and added two assists and a steal in 19 minutes.
Senior Brett Green added 14 points, an assist and a steal in a team-high 35 minutes. He was 3-of-6 from the field, 1-of-4 from the perimeter and 7-of-10 from the foul line.
Senior Luke Meisch added nine points and eight rebounds, Trey Winbush notched six points off the bench and Gokul Natesan added six points as well.
The Grizzlies shot 58.8 percent in the first half and scored 20 points off 11 Oredigger turnovers to take a 51-37 lead at halftime. ASU increased its lead to as much as 21 points in the second half before closing out the 89-75 victory.
Mines will close out its two-game home stand on Saturday when the squad hosts Fort Lewis (12-4, 9-3 RMAC) at Lockridge Arena at 7 p.m.
