Tracksters Take Part In Air Force Invite Friday

COLORADO SPRINGS – A handful of personal-bests and numerous top finishes among the Division II ranks highlighted the opening day at the Air Force Invitational for the Colorado School of Mines track and field teams at Cadet Field House in Colorado Springs.

Senior Ryan Ewen led the men to a sweep of the top-four Division II placements in the weight throw with a heave of 16.73 meters, 11th-best overall among 22 throwers. Junior Austin Roup was 14th (15.09m), senior Nicolo Redfern 15th (15.07m) and sophomore Jacob Hollister 16th (14.50m).

Senior Casie Ratzlaff was best among the Division II contingent in the women's competition, placing 13th of 25 with a distance of 15.11 meters.

Junior Garrett Hoch and sophomore Austin Shaffer qualified for the finals of the 400 with respective top-six Division II times of 49.88 and 50.15. Freshman Matthew Drotar failed to advance through the qualifying rounds, but timed a personal-record 50.35.

In the preliminaries of the 200, Hoch bettered his personal-best in 22.80 and Shaffer in 23.59.

Sophomore McKenzie Zeman reset her previous bests in the 200 and 400, established at last Saturday's Potts Indoor Invitational in Boulder, with Division II-leading prelims times of 26.12 and 58.88.

The lone Division II representative in the men's 800 final field, junior Kodi Burns took third overall against five Division I runners in 2:00.77.

Junior Ben Timmer finished first in the Division II standings and second overall in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.60 meters, and junior Corbette Tschanz and freshman Jessie Berndsen tied for second amid Division II vaulters at 3.05 meters.

Junior Michelle Rigsby earned second in the long jump and 13th out of 29 overall thanks to a leap of 5.19 meters and classmate Marc Leachman was fourth and 18th, respectively, marking a distance of 5.96 meters.

The Invitational concludes Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. with the men's shot put, women's seeded pole vault and men's seeded high jump.
