GOLDEN – Colorado School of Mines women's basketball had two clean looks at a game-tying three-pointer in the final minute Friday, but failed to connect as the Orediggers suffered a 64-55 setback to Western State in Lockridge Arena.
Down 58-55, senior Courtney Gallo, No. 4 on the Mines career three-point chart, tried a right wing triple with 54 seconds remaining and freshman Laura Tyree followed 12 ticks later with a look at the top of arc; however, both efforts harmlessly fell off to the right.
Western State (5-7, 5-2 RMAC) secured the wire-to-wire win with the game's final six points as Desiree Smith and Jade McIntosh combined for a 6-of-6 effort at the free throw line.
McIntosh finished with a game-high 28 points, converting 10-of-11 free throws, and Smith led the bench with 14.
Gallo and Tyree shared the team lead with 15 points.
Senior Allie Grazulis, who set up Tyree's last minute three-point attempt with her fourth of five offensive rebounds, earned her second straight double-double and third of the season with 10 points and game-high 10 boards.
Despite a 2-of-14 start from the floor and season-low 18 points in the first half, Mines (3-7, 2-4 RMAC) twice trimmed the nine-point halftime deficit to one, the latter at 47-46 with 6:05 to play after an 11-2 run that included nine consecutive points over a 3:01 span.
The Mountaineers ended the evening 21-of-59 (.356), 6-of-15 (.400) along the perimeter and 16-of-18 (.889) at the stripe, while limiting the Orediggers to only 32.1 percent (17-of-53) overall and 18.2 percent (4-of-22) from distance, including 0-of-5 the last 1:53.
Mines is back home Saturday as the women host unbeaten and WBCA/USA TODAY Sports No. 5 Colorado Mesa at 5 p.m. in Golden.
