GOLDEN – The Colorado School of Mines men's basketball team put all five starters in double figures on the way to a 90-66 victory over South Dakota Mines on Saturday afternoon at Lockridge Arena in Golden.
Mines (2-0) shot 57.6 percent (38-of-66) from the floor while leading start-to-finish in the contest. The Orediggers entered the break up 20 points at 45-25 over the Hardrockers (0-5), allowing them to capture the win despite a 54-point effort from the SDSMT bench.
The squad was led by 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting from reigning RMAC Freshman of the Year Gokul Natesan, including a 4-of-9 mark from downtown. The Santa Clara, Calif., product added two boards, a block and a steal in a team-high 31 minutes on Saturday.
Senior Trevor Ritchie added 12 points and nine assists to narrowly miss a double-double during the win, and added a block and a steal as well on 6-of-9 shooting.
Sophomore Caleb Waitsman finished 7-of-12 from the floor on the way to 19 points to lead Mines' 52-point effort in the paint. The Fayetteville, Ark., product added six boards, two blocks, an assist and a steal while finishing 5-of-6 from the foul line.
Mines' fourth player in double figures was senior Brian Muller, who knocked in 13 points on a 5-of-8 effort from the field, including a 3-of-5 ratio from long range. He added two steals and four boards as well in the win.
Junior Joe Dellenbach closed the squad's five double-figure scorers with 12 points while leading the team with seven rebounds. He was 5-of-7 from the floor, 2-of-3 from 3-point range and added a pair of assists as well.
Mines will close out its nonconference slate next weekend with matchups against UC San Diego on Friday and MidAmerica Nazarene on Saturday.
