GOLDEN – Senior Taylor Helbig poured in a school record 38 points and Colorado School of Mines women's basketball cruised to an 86-65 win over visiting McMurry on Friday at Lockridge Arena.

Helbig had 20 of her 38 points – most among RMAC players in 2014 – in the first 20:00 as Mines (2-1) took its initial halftime lead of the season, 44-35.

The women quickly expanded the nine-point lead to 54-35 5:54 into second half and remained in front by no less than 18 points the rest of the way.

Helbig finished the evening 13-of-26, including 8-of-16 from outside, with four rebounds and three steals.

The Thornton product broke the scoring mark of 35, previously set by Laura Marshall against Western State in 1989-90, with two free throws with 1:13 to play and established the record with a second pair 22 seconds later in closing 4-of-6 at the line.

Only the seventh individual to score 30 or points in program archives, Helbig is now two shy of tying Peanut Eickelman (133; 2005-09) for third on the Mines career three-point field goals list.

Backed by a 53.6 percent (15-of-28) clip from the field in the first frame, including 60.0 percent (9-of-15) on threes, Mines concluded 31-of-66 (.470) and 11-of-25 (.440), respectively – both season-highs.

Sophomore Laura Tyree posted a season-best 13 points and eight rebounds and freshman Elizabeth Tomon came off the bench for a season-high 10 points and six boards.

Taylor Neal led McMurry (1-2) with 15 points. Adijatu Disu added 14 and Haley Welch 10.

Mines wraps up its season-opening four-game home swing at 6 p.m. Saturday against Johnson & Wales.
