LAKEWOOD – The No. 5 Colorado School of Mines volleyball squad defeated local rival Colorado Christian on the road by a 3-0 final to close the regular season on Friday and claim a share of its third-straight RMAC Volleyball Championship.
Set scores for the match were 25-22, 25-15, 27-25.
The Orediggers (24-2, 17-1 RMAC) were named co-champions of the 2014 RMAC volleyball season after tying with No. 9 Colorado Mesa (24-3, 17-1 RMAC), who closed the regular season with a pair of wins on Thursday and Friday. The RMAC Championship was the Mines' third in the last three seasons.
The Orediggers also tied the program record for conference victories in a season with their 17th on Friday, and the squad now sits just two wins shy of the program record for overall wins in a season of 26 set during the 2012 season during Mines' first-ever conference volleyball title.
Senior Sarah Pekarek led the team with a 10-kill, 14-dig double-double in the win while adding five assisted blocks and a service ace. He double-double on Friday was her sixth of the season and the 23rd of her career.
Sophomore Alanna Winfield added 10 kills on a .320 attack percentage in addition to four digs, and three total blocks on the defensive side.
Junior Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood added 34 assists, six digs and four blocks in the win, while freshman Ellie Monarch notched eight kills and tied for the team lead with six total blocks.
Sophomore Megan Peterson added eight kills and tied for the team lead with six total blocks as well and sophomore Taryn Huber recorded 11 digs while senior Cassie Vick added six.
The Orediggers will find out their first-round RMAC Tournament opponent on Saturday with the conclusion of the RMAC regular season. Mines will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed and will host an opponent that is yet to be determined at Lockridge Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
