SAN ANGELO, Texas – A five-run home half of the third inning proved to be enough cushion for NCBWA No. 25 Angelo State, as the Rams completed the Saturday doubleheader sweep over the Colorado School of Mines baseball team with a 7-2 victory in game two at Foster Field.

Mines (2-4) was limited to four hits in the matchup, with senior Charlie Basil, sophomores Nate Olinger and Travis Ramos and freshman Cody Marvel each recording a base knock.

Ramos finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Marvel scored once on a 1-for-2 batting line.

Junior Ben Gilman (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs (all earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched.

Freshmen James Wurster and A.J. Valerio combined for 3.2 innings of three-hit, shutout relief over the seven-inning contest.

Jason Zgardowski (1-0) captured the win for ASU after allowing just one earned run on four hits in a seven-inning complete game. He struck out 10 Oredigger batters and did not issue a walk in 96 pitches.

Angelo State (9-2) put up two runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead before Mines answered with two of its own in the ensuing half inning.

After Marvel doubled to left center, he was brought around to score in the next at-bat on a single to center by Ramos. Ramos came around to score following an Olinger single and an Angelo State error to tie up the score, 2-2.

The Rams plated five runs in the third for a 7-2 lead and neither team would be able to score the rest of the way.

The two teams will close out the series on Sunday with a nine-inning game at 1 p.m. (CST) at Foster Field.
