GOLDEN – Senior Allie Grazulis just missed on a game-tying field goal in the final seconds and Colorado School of Mines women's basketball dropped a physical, defensive battle to visiting Metro State, 46-44, Friday at Lockridge Arena.

Following a miss on the front end of a one-and-one by Metro State's Amy Nelson and ensuing Mines timeout with 3.8 seconds left, Grazulis got off a clean look from the right hash, but the eight-foot jumper circled the rim before sliding off to the front.

Grazulis earned her team-leading seventh double-double, owning game-highs of 14 points behind 5-of-10 field goals and 14 rebounds in addition to team-bests of three assists, two steals and one block. She moved past Kelly Hadley (1983-87) for fourth-most rebounds in Mines history with 731.

The Orediggers (7-13, 6-10 RMAC) finished with seven of the game's final nine points, getting as close as two with 38 seconds to play on a three-pointer by senior Courtney Gallo. 

Junior Taylor Helbig added eight points for Mines, which shot 17-of-54 (.315) and 2-of-9 (.222) from the perimeter.

Metro State (10-10, 9-7 RMAC) reversed a 34-28 deficit with a 12-0 run to go in front 40-34 at the 5:07 mark of the second, and 2:59 later, took its largest lead of the game at 44-37 on a layup by Fawn Brady.

Brady tallied nine points and Kya DeGarmo 10 to lead the Roadrunners.

Working out of a zone defense for most of the evening, the Orediggers kept MSUD to 32.7 percent (16-of-49) shooting and 7-of-21 (.333) three-pointers, forcing 16 turnovers.

Mines continues its four-game home stand at 5 p.m. tomorrow against Regis.
