ALAMOSA – Spurred by nine all-conference performances Friday, the Colorado School of Mines track and field teams ranked second and fifth following Day 1 of the 2014 RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships at the High Altitude Training Center in Alamosa.
Senior Kayla Johnson broke her program record in the pentathlon for the second time this season, repeating as a Second Team selection with fourth place out of 11 in an NCAA provisional 3478. She secured second in the 800 (2:31.39) and third in both the 60-meter hurdles (9.13) and long jump (17-5.25; 5.31m).
Johnson was one of eight to advance to the championship finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a fifth-place time of 9.25 in preliminaries.
Mines accounted for four of the top-seven distances in the men's weight throw, led by senior and Second Team honoree Ryan Ewen who placed third of 14 behind a provisional 58-6.50 (17.84m).
Earning Third Team merit was sophomore Jacob Hollister in fifth (54-3.75; 16.55m) and junior Austin Roup in sixth (52-4.00; 15.95m). Sophomore Jace Warren finished seventh (51-10.00; 15.80m).
Sophomores Chloe Gustafson and Derek Alcorn both ran under the provisional standard in the 5000 with Gustafon taking First Team honors as runner-up out of 14 and in 18:28.82 and Alcorn crossing fifth of 17 in a Third Team time of 15:30.20.
Junior Justin Gildemeister and freshman Jessie Berndsen claimed All-RMAC laurels for the first time in the pole vault as Gildemeister tied for second with a height of 14-7.50 (4.46m) and Berndsen took fourth of nine, clearing 10-8.00 (3.25m).
Junior Michelle Rigsby earned the first all-conference accolade of her career in the long jump with fifth place among 22 at a distance of 18-1.75 (5.53m).
Along with Johnson, five other Orediggers qualified for finals on Saturday.
Sophomore McKenzie Zeman was fourth of 22 in the 400 prelims in 59.27 and sixth of 24 in the 200.
Junior Garrett Hoch, sophomore Austin Shaffer and freshman Matthew Drotar went 3-4-5 in the men's 400 as Hoch and Shaffer timed provisionals of 49.52 and 49.56, respectively, and Drotar stopped the clock in 49.94.
Freshman Patrick Weaver posted his sixth provisional in the 800, qualifying fifth of 12 in 1:55.48.
The men are second of eight in the team standings through five events with 31 points, while the women sit fifth of 10 with 23 points after six scored events.
The championships resume at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon.
