PUEBLO – Colorado School of Mines track and field impressed in its chilly outdoor opener Saturday, combining for 18 top-two finishes at the CSU-Pueblo Open at the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl in Pueblo.
Named Preseason All-RMAC for the first time yesterday, junior Seun Ogunmodede posted two wins in his 2013-14 debut with a personal-record 20-10.75 (6.37m) in the long jump and 44-0.50 (13.42m) on his first attempt in the triple jump. Sophomore James Lewis was third in the long jump at 20-5.75 (6.24m).
Senior Kayla Johnson placed second out of seven in the women's triple jump with a distance of 36-5.75 (11.12m) and junior Michelle Rigsby third at 36-2.25 (11.03m). Johnson added runner-up in 100-meter hurdles in 15.44 and Rigbsy was third of 11 in the long jump at 16-4.50 (4.99m).
Sophomore McKenzie Zeman took second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.30 and anchored the 4x400 of freshman Elizabeth Gabel, freshman Amanda Giles and Johnson to runner-up of six in 4:18.98.
The men shined in the sprints and mid-distance, led by freshman Patrick Weaver in the 11-runner 800 with a NCAA provisional and first-place time of 1:52.52. Sophomore Garrett Hoch finished second in 1:54.03 and classmate Kodi Burns fourth in 2:02.63.
Freshman Matthew Drotar led four Orediggers in the top-four of the 400 in 48.77. Freshman Ryan Morningstar followed in second (49.92), freshman Michael Lanahan third (51.34) and sophomore Nicholas Masching fourth (52.24).
Lewis claimed the 200 in 23.12 and freshman Billy Helm ranked second in 24.04.
Mines went 2-3-4 in the 100 as freshman Dakota Burgerhoff ran 11.78, junior Marc Leachman 11.80 and Helm 12.04.
Raymond Simmons debuted first in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.79.
Drotar, Lanahan, Weaver and Hoch combined for the win in the six-team 4x400 in 3:25.30.
Sophomore Dallas Hall won the high jump with height of 5-8.75 (1.75m) and Morningstar was second at 5-7.00 (1.70m).
Junior Ben Timmer was best in the pole vault competition, clearing his first height of 14-1.25 (4.30m).
On Friday, the Orediggers competed 14 in the hammer throw, women's javelin and men's 10,000 at Colorado's Jerry Quiller Classic in Boulder.
Junior Derek Alcorn was the fastest Division II runner and fourth overall among 15 in the 10K with the first provisional nationally in the event in 30:59.24. Redshirt freshman Nathanael Williams placed eighth (31:52.48), senior Tyler Curtis ninth (32:44.25) and sophomore Joe Bourgeois 11th (33:09.29).
Junior Austin Roup sat eighth out of 17 in the hammer throw at 163-03 (49.76m) and classmate Nicolo Redfern 12th at 150-11 (46.00m). Junior Hannah Weidman and senior Casie Ratzlaff were 10th and 11th of 17 in the women's field with respective tosses of 143-10 (43.85m) and 141-11 (43.26m).
Giles earned fourth of 12 in the javelin, leading the Division II throwers with a launch of 112-00 (34.14m).
The men and women make their home debut March 29 at the Front Range Open at the Stermole Track & Field Complex/Crouch Field Events Complex in Golden.
