DENVER – Colorado School of Mines softball grabbed a first inning lead for the second straight game against Regis, but could only muster two runs the rest of the way as the Rangers took the opener Monday at Regis Softball Field, 9-4.
Senior Sami Springer lifted Mines (8-16, 4-11 RMAC) to the initial advantage with a two-run homer to centerfield, scoring classmate Morgan Anderson who reached with one out after taking a pitch the right elbow.
After going hitless in its first two at-bats, Regis (11-17, 10-8 RMAC) came alive in the third with four runs on four hits and an Oredigger error. The Rangers bumped the lead to 9-2 with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
A one-out triple to right center by freshman Paige Noehring, RBI single through the middle from Anderson and run-scoring double to leftfield by Springer in the top half of the seventh resulted in the game's ending margin.
Springer and Noehring each went 2-for-4 with two extra-base hits and a run scored. Anderson was 1-for-3 with one RBI and a pair of runs.
The second long ball of the season for Springer moved her past former teammate Molly Thiebaut (2010-13) for fifth place in Mines archives in career runs with 122, while her 36th collegiate double tied her with Deborah Ausmus (1993-95) for fifth in the record book.
Sophomore Kristen Prudhomme (7-12) was tagged with the complete game setback, allowing six earned runs and 13 hits with four strikeouts across the 6.0 innings.
