Softball Relinquishes Early Lead, Falls 13-8 To Fort Lewis

GOLDEN – Colorado School of Mines softball held a 6-3 after one inning, but was outscored 10-2 over the final six frames as Fort Lewis rallied to a 13-8 win in game one Sunday at CSM Softball Field in Golden.

Mines (10-18, 6-13 RMAC) followed a three-run homer in the top of the first with a five-hit, six run outburst in its initial at-bat. Senior Courtney Derus contributed an RBI single to left; senior Melissa Marshall stroked a three-run double down the leftfield line and freshman Kara Walling squeezed home a run with a bunt single to the pitcher.

Walling and senior Gianna Duncan executed a first-and-third double steal with two outs to cap the scoring.

Fort Lewis (18-15, 14-9 RMAC) added one in each of the next two frames, before the Orediggers bumped the lead back to three, 8-5, in the third on an RBI single through the middle by Walling and second successful double steal that scored freshman Rebecca Fallon.

The Skyhawks took control though with five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth via nine of their 20 total hits in the game.

Four Orediggers had two or more hits, led by Duncan who finished 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Marshall was 2-for-4 with the three RBI and two runs; junior Cassie Ford 2-for-4 with one run and Walling 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Sophomore starter Kristen Prudhomme (9-13) surrendered eight earned runs and 17 hits across 4.1 innings of work in the setback.
