GOLDEN – Colorado School of Mines softball survived a frenetic three-run seventh inning comeback bid by Adams State and notched its first win of the three-team weekend pod on Friday afternoon at CSM Softball Field in Golden, 5-4.

Mines (13-22, 9-17 RMAC) scratched across one run in the first inning and built the lead to 3-0 with two runs on four hits in the third. Freshman Jennifer Tippetts drove a two-out RBI single to right center and classmate Kara Walling laid down a bunt single to third, scoring senior Gianna Duncan.

ASU (20-19, 18-11 RMAC) got on the board with one in the fifth; however, two errors in the bottom of the frame, including a dropped fly ball by the centerfielder, allowed the Orediggers to extend the margin to four, 5-1.

The Grizzlies took advantage of a pair of Mines miscues in their half of the seventh and brought the go-ahead run to the plate with no out, but two fly outs to centerfield and leaping snare of a line drive by second baseman Morgan Anderson ended the threat.

Walling hit 2-for-3 and Tippetts 1-for-3 with one RBI apiece.

Senior Melissa Marshall closed 2-for-3 with two runs and freshman Paige Noehring 2-for-3 with one run and a sacrifice bunt.

Duncan did not register an at-bat, adding to her team-best in walks (18) with three and tying Marshall for the game-high in runs scored.

Sophomore Kristen Prudhomme grinded her way to an RMAC-best 11th win on the rubber, throwing 7.0 innings and 88 pitches with only one earned run and 10 hits allowed.

Mines meets the Grizzlies again at 10 a.m. Saturday and ends the round-robin at 2 p.m. against Colorado Christian.
