GOLDEN – Colorado School of Mines softball strung together three innings of two or more runs, capped by a seven-run outburst in the fourth to down Adams State 12-3 in five innings Saturday morning at CSM Softball Field.
Mines (14-22, 10-17 RMAC) began the scoring in the second as senior Gianna Duncan tripled in classmate Melissa Marshall and came home on an RBI bunt to third by freshman Kara Walling.
The Grizzlies took its first lead at 3-2 in the top of the third, but the Orediggers went back in front three in their ensuing at-bat; senior Courtney Derus skyed a two-run homer to left center and Marshall scampered home on a fielder's choice as Duncan worked a rundown between first and second.
The Orediggers put the game out of reach in the fourth as 11 batters combined for seven run on eight hits. Senior Morgan Anderson opened with an RBI groundout to second and was followed by run-scoring singles from senior Sami Springer, Marshall, Duncan, freshman Rebecca Fallon and Walling. Marshall sent a two-run opposite field single just to the right of the first baseman to push the score to 9-3.
Duncan and Walling each hit 3-of-3 with two RBI to lead Mines' 13-hit effort. Duncan added two runs and Walling one run and a stolen base.
Marshall was 2-for-3 with two RBI and season-high tying three runs scored.
Derus finished 1-for-2 with two RBI, two runs and one walk. Her team-leading ninth home run and 19th in two seasons since transferring from Pittsburgh brought her within one of tying former teammate Macy Jones (20; 2010-13) for seventh among the program's career leaders.
Anderson, Springer and Fallon had one RBI apiece.
Sophomore Kristen Prudhomme (12-16) nailed down the mercy rule complete game, giving up three earned runs and six hits with four strikeouts on 69 pitches.
