Mines Produces Seven Provisionals, Two School Records Thursday

WALNUT, Calif. – The Colorado School of Mines track and field teams accrued seven NCAA provisional qualifications and two school records in their second day on the West Coast Thursday.

Senior Kayla Johnson and freshman Amanda Giles completed the final three events of the Mt. SAC Relays and California Invitational heptathlon at Azusa Pacific, placing 23rd and 41st out of 44 in the "A" flight, respectively.

Driven by 745 points and a personal-best 2:25.92 in the 800, Johnson became the first in program history to score more than 4500 points, surpassing former teammate Erin Beach's record of 4273 from 2013 with a provisional aggregate of 4561.

Johnson earned her third PR of the meet in the day's opening event, recording a distance of 5.26 meters and 631 points in the long jump. She scored 386 points in the javelin (25.19m).

Giles combined for 1662 points Thursday, adding 669 in the 800 (2:31.89), 605 in the javelin after tying her school record from last week (36.77m), and 388 in the long jump (4.34m) to finish with a 3859 total.

Junior Austin Roup and sophomore Jacob Hollister went 9-10 of 12 in Flight 3 of the hammer throw at Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational at Cerritos College. Roup posted his initial provisional of the season with a distance of 183-02 (55.82m) on his third throw, while Hollister spun 175-11 (53.62m) on his second attempt.

The Orediggers closed the evening at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif., totaling five qualifying times across three heats of the 10,000 as part of the Mt. SAC Relays.

Junior Phil Schneider ran 27th in the invitational section of the elite division in 30:39.30, and senior Andrew Epperson ranked eighth (29:48.66), senior Sean Gildea 12th (29:58.60) and junior Derek Alcorn 17th (30:05.56) in the 34-runner Olympic Development race.

Sophomore Chloe Gustafson placed fourth of 22 in the women's collegiate open in 36:24.10.

In addition to the Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invite this afternoon, Mines opens the two-day Beach Invitational, contested by Long Beach State at Cerritos College, at 1 p.m. (MDT).
