ALAMOSA – Leading by a score of 3-1 on Saturday, the Colorado School of Mines baseball team added one more insurance run on Sunday en route to a two-day 4-1 win over Adams State in the third game of the series at the ASU Baseball Field.
Sophomore righty Christian Rooney (4-4) earned the win after notching his third-straight start allowing two or fewer runs during the contest for Mines (13-15, 11-10 RMAC).
The Lakewood native limited the Grizzlies (11-21, 9-13 RMAC) to one run (earned) on three hits over 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.
Senior Peter Herrin (0-0) captured the save after shutting the door down the stretch with 2 2/3 innings of no-hit, shutout relief on the way to his first save of the season.
Sophomore Nate Olinger led the offense with a 2-for-4 batting line with a run scored and an RBI, with both hits coming on doubles.
Freshman Cody Marvel notched another RBI, his team-leading 25th of the season, while also scoring a run on a 1-for-3 performance at the plate. He also collected one of Mines' three walks during the contest.
Senior Derek Skrdlant (1-for-3, RBI), junior Evan Brown (1-for-2, RBI), junior Zach Bothwell (1-for-2, run, walk), sophomore Josh Martinez (1-for-4, run) and senior Charlie Basil (1-for-3) recorded base hits as well.
The first of Olinger's two doubles gave Mines a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when his two-bagger to right field scored Martinez. Mines added another run when Marvel singled to center which scored Olinger and gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.
ASU answered in the home half of the third inning with a run of its own, but the Orediggers answered in the ensuing half inning on a sacrifice fly to center by Brown which scored Marvel, pushing Mines' lead to 3-1.
At that point of the contest on Saturday, the game was suspended due to snowfall and when the game continued on Sunday, the Orediggers added one more run in the sixth inning in the form of an RBI single to third base by Skrdlant, scoring Bothwell and giving Mines a 4-1 lead it would not relinquish.
