SILVER CITY, N.M. – Colorado School of Mines softball generated 10 or more hits for the third straight game, but could not overcome a five-run third inning by Western New Mexico as the Mustangs salvaged the series split, 7-4, in Sunday's finale in Silver City, N.M.
WNMU (12-29, 10-18 RMAC) took control with five runs on five hits, including a one-out grand slam to left in its third-inning at-bat.
Sophomore Elise Dugwyler got the Orediggers (12-21, 8-16 RMAC) into the scoring column via an RBI single to second in the top of the fourth.
Following two Mustang runs in the fourth, Mines plated two in its next at-bat as junior Cassie Ford doubled in senior Sami Springer and sophomore pinch runner Dana Gallegos scored on a wild pitch.
Senior Courtney Derus squared her third home run of the day and team-leading eighth of the season – tied for seventh-most in the conference – with one out in the seventh for the game's ending margin.
All nine starters produced at least one hit.
Derus was 2-for-4 with the one RBI and two runs scored.
Springer, as well as classmates Morgan Anderson and Melissa Marshall, each went 2-for-4.
Springer became the fifth Oredigger in program history to reach 200 career hits with her one-out single through the left side in the first inning.
Dugwyler and Ford both finished 1-for-4, while freshman Paige Noehring, senior Gianna Duncan and freshman Rebecca Fallon also had one base hit.
Sophomore Kristen Prudhomme fell to 10-15 in the circle, giving up five earned runs and eight hits across 3.0 innings of work. Freshman Angela Eickelman worked her second straight scoreless relief appearance, allowing only one hit and one walk on 35 pitches in 3.0 innings out of the bullpen.
Mines is back in Golden April 12-13 for a three-team pod with Colorado Christian and Adams State at CSM Softball Field. The Orediggers host CCU at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and ASU 2 p.m. and 10 a.m. on the respective days.
