Tracksters Utilize “Last Chance” In Home Finale

GOLDEN – Looking to bolster its national meet roster, Colorado School of Mines track and field secured 11 NCAA provisional tallies and a school record at the home finale CSM Last Chance Meet on Friday and Saturday at Stermole Track & Field Complex/Crouch Field Events Complex in Golden.

Senior Kayla Johnson rewrote her second outdoor program record of the season, earning runner-up and a provisional 39-0.25 (11.89m) on her final collegiate attempt in the triple jump. She added fifth in the long jump with a personal-best 17-10.25 (5.44m).

Junior Michelle Rigsby ranked fourth in the events, bounding to a distance of 37-9.25 (11.51m) in the triple jump and 18-3.25 (5.57m) in the long jump. Classmate Seun Ogunmodede finished first on the men's side in the latter with a provisional 23-10.0 (7.26m).

Behind three provisional distances, the all-conference men's hammer throw trio of junior Austin Roup, sophomore Jacob Hollister and senior Ryan Ewen once again swept the top-three; Roup won with a personal-record 194-7 (59.30m), Hollister was second at 183-11 (56.05m) and Ewen third at 180-6 (55.01m).

Junior Nicolo Redfern sat fourth (164-8; 50.19m) and sophomore Jace Warren fifth (164-4; 50.08m).

Senior Sean Gildea and sophomore Marty Andrie each provisionally qualified in the 1500, going 3-4 out of 16 in 3:55.78 and 3:56.33, respectively.

Freshman Patrick Weaver posted the team's initial provisional in the 400 in a winning time of 47.81, while sophomore Garrett Hoch added his third qualifying time in the 800, placing third of 19 in 1:51.93.

On Friday, Weaver, Hoch, sophomore Ian Rozier and freshman Ryan Morningstar combined for a season-best provisional and track record in the 4x400 in 3:11.86.

Senior Neal Anderson improved upon his provisional qualification in the 3000-meter steeplechase, taking first in 9:27.59.

Freshmen Jeffrey Stephens and Amanda Giles won their respective flights of the javelin as Stephens established the facility mark at 185-4 (56.49m), just 0.75 inches away from the modern era Mines record set in 1988 by John Zuklic, and Giles threw 113-10 (34.69m).

Junior Derek Alcorn contributed a win in the 5000 in 15:10.00 and classmate Justin Gildemeister finished runner-up in the pole vault at 15-3.5 (4.66m).

The list of qualifiers to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be released at 4 p.m. (MST) Tuesday on NCAA.com. Hosted by Grand Valley State, the championships run May 22-24 at the GVSU track and field complex in Allendale, Mich.
