Gildea Runs To Seventh Place, All-American Merit In 10,000

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Senior Sean Gildea seized his first All-American award on the oval and four individuals advanced to their respective finals as Colorado School of Mines track and field opened the 2014 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday in Allendale, Mich.

Gildea, a three-time USTFCCCA cross country All-American, earned the program's second All-American trophy in the 10,000 in as many seasons and fifth overall, taking seventh of 19 runners in 30:00.70.

Junior Derek Alcorn and senior Andrew Epperson ranked in the top-15 for a second straight year, finishing 10-11 in 30:19.47 and 30:21.31, respectively.

Senior Hannah Schuster qualified for Saturday's 1500 final with the top at-large time of 4:28.47, fifth-fastest overall among 21, while classmate Frank Socha was one of eight automatic qualifiers out of the men's prelims, winning heat one in 3:55.26.

Sophomore Marty Andrie narrowly missed on the last at-large qualification by 0.23 seconds with the ninth-best time overall of 3:54.79.

Senior classmates Tyler Curtis and Neal Anderson both staked positions in the 12-runner final of the men's 3000-meter steeplechase on Friday as Curtis, the 2013 national runner-up, posted the No. 3 auto time of 9:06.85 and Anderson the No. 3 at-large time of 9:12.31.

The team's initial hammer throw qualifiers in over a decade, junior Austin Roup debuted 12th of 20 at 188-9 (57.53m) and sophomore Jacob Hollister 15th with a best of 184-10 (56.34m).

The Orediggers continue the three-day meet today at Grand Valley State with the men's 800 prelims at 6 p.m. (EST) and the 3000-meter steeplechase final at 7:10 p.m.
