LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The No. 16 Colorado School of Mines volleyball team continued its road trip through the "Land of Enchantment" on Friday and left the state of New Mexico with a pair of wins following a 3-0 victory over New Mexico Highlands at the Wilson Complex in Las Vegas, N.M.
Mines (9-1, 2-0 RMAC), currently on a three-match, three-night road swing to start the conference season, captured the straight-set win behind scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-18.
The Orediggers posted sideout rates of 0.63, 0.63 and 0.78 and limited NMHU (4-7, 0-2 RMAC) to a .151 attack percentage in the win, moving the program's record against the Cowgirls to 13-6 since 1992.
Junior setter Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood posted her second 20-dig match of the season with 29 assists and 20 digs while directing Mines' 44-kill attack. The double-double output was her eighth such performance this season and the 41st of her career. Her 29-assist match on Saturday leaves her 52 shy of tying Amanda Massey (2008-11) for the top spot in the program's career assists charts.
Sophomore Alanna Winfield posted a match-high 10 kills on a .185 attack percentage to lead the front-line offense, while sophomore Megan Peterson added eight kills and three digs on a .261 hitting clip.
Senior Sarah Pekarek led the team with a .300 attack percentage with seven kills and four assists offensively. She added nine digs and a block on defense to narrowly miss a double-double of her own.
Freshman Mattie Behr and sophomore Abby Reuland combined for 13 kills and three total blocks as well.
Sophomore Taryn Huber recorded 14 digs to lead Mines' trio of defensive specialists, while also adding five assists and a service ace offensively. Senior Cassie Vick and junior Corrine Din combined for six digs and each registered a kill as well.
The Orediggers will go for a sweep to open the conference schedule on Saturday when the squad travels to face CSU-Pueblo (7-3, 1-0 RMAC) on Saturday at Massari Arena in Pueblo. Results for CSUP's match on Friday were not available at the time of publishing.
