GOLDEN – Colorado School of Mines women's basketball shot 50.0 percent in the second half and turned away a hard-charging Regis squad Friday evening at Lockridge Arena to end its four-game slide, 68-62.
Mines (7-7, 2-6 RMAC) grabbed a 59-52 lead with 6:39 to play on a takeaway and fast break lay-in by sophomore Laura Tyree.
The Rangers clawed within 63-62 following a 10-4 spurt, but were held scoreless over the final 3:31 as senior Taylor Helbig sank two free throws and Tyree buried a momentum-grabbing three-pointer to ice the team's fifth home win.
The Orediggers closed 15-of-30 (.500) in the half and finished the evening 25-of-60 (.417) overall, while Regis mustered only 29.4 percent (10-of-34) en route to a 35.5 (22-of-62) clip. Mines converted a season-best 80.0 percent (12-of-15) at the line.
Tyree led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-19 field goals, including 3-of-3 from outside, and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Helbig posted 10 points, six rebounds and season-high five steals in her return from injury and was matched by classmate Sam Rusk in both scoring and rebounding.
Bay'lee Purdy paced the Rangers (8-4, 4-4 RMAC) with 17 points. Karlyn Johnson had 12 and Mary Sigler 10.
The Orediggers complete the weekend against MSU Denver at 5 p.m. Saturday in Golden.
