Skyhawks Fend Off Mines In Second Half

DURANGO – Fort Lewis scored the first seven points after halftime and led throughout the entirety of the second 20:00 to claim a 80-73 home win over Colorado School of Mines women's basketball on Saturday at Whalen Gymnasium.

Mines (9-10, 4-9 RMAC) got as close as 56-55 and 58-57 on consecutive jumpers by junior Courtney Martin with 8:39 to play. The Orediggers failed to close inside four points over the final 7:45 though as FLC boasted an 18-7 free throw advantage in the frame, making 18-of-21 (.857).

Senior Taylor Helbig powered Mines with 16 of the team's 38 second-half points to finish with a game-high 29 behind 10-of-23 field goals and 7-of-14 threes.

Junior Courtney Martin had 14 points, while senior Sam Rusk sported her second double-double of the weekend and team-leading third of 2014-15 with 10 points and season-high tying 13 rebounds.

Kylie Santos led four Skyhawks (10-7, 7-6 RMAC) in double figures with 16. Kate Bayes posted 15, keying FLC to a 30-12 margin in bench production; Skylyn Webb recorded 12 and 11, and Mary Brinton had 12.

Kaile Magazzeni held the game-high with 14 rebounds.

The teams shot nearly identical percentages from the floor as Mines was 25-of-65 (.385) and FLC 24-of-62 (.387). The Orediggers ended at 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from distance and the Skyhawks 89.7 percent (26-of-29) at the line.

The Orediggers are back in Golden next Friday, Jan. 30, hosting co-RMAC leader Colorado Mesa at 6 p.m. at Lockridge Arena.
