GUNNISON – No. 9/13 Colorado School of Mines men's basketball reached 10-0 for the second straight season, picking up a wire-to-wire 88-73 win over Western State on Friday at Paul Wright Gym in Gunnison.

Workmanlike throughout, Mines built a 42-33 lead at halftime and extinguished any Western State comeback bid in the second to move to 6-0 in the RMAC standings.

The Mountaineers got as close as 50-47 at 15:00 before a swift 8-0 Mines spurt and ensuing 15-4 run over the next 5:08 left the Orediggers in control at 65-51.

Four starters reached double digit scoring for the second outing in a row, paced by redshirt senior Trevor Ritchie with a game-high 20 points behind 7-of-12 shooting and 6-of-8 free throws.

Sophomore Caleb Waitsman recorded his team-leading third double-double, pouring in 16 points on 7-of-11 field goals and grabbing a game-best 13 rebounds.

Redshirt senior Brian Muller contributed 16 points, sophomore Gokul Natesan 15 and redshirt sophomore Garrett Loew nine.

Second in Division II in field goal percentage at the beginning of the night, the Orediggers closed slightly below their season average, hitting better than 50.0 percent for the sixth consecutive game at 51.7 (31-of-60).

Mines dominated the interior, 46-28, and held a 14-point advantage in points off turnovers, converting 14 giveaways into 23 points.

The Mountaineers (2-9, 1-6 RMAC) shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) for the evening, including 47.6 percent (10-of-21) outside. Mason Biddie led with 19 points and Chances Matlock had 10 off the bench.

The Orediggers face a stiff test in Colorado Mesa, winners of six straight, in the weekend finale at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Grand Junction.
