Box Score How It Happened
After losing its first home match of the season, the 17th-ranked Colorado School of Mines (12-4, 6-2) volleyball program shook it off and downed Rocky Division leader UCCS (12-6, 6-2) 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-12) on Saturday, October 10 in Lockridge Arena.
The Orediggers came out of the gate sluggish as they hit .091 while the Mountain Lions came out smoking by hitting .308 to take the opening frame, 25-19. RMAC kills leader Kim Catlett drilled six kills in the frame to get her team off to a great start.
Realizing that Catlett was on top of her game and had to be neutralized, Mines started going after her on the serve to get her out of an offensive rhythm. It took a while for that approach to really be realized as again UCCS was strong in the second set. It wasn't until late in second period that CSM was able to pull away, 25-21, and tie the match.
From that point forward, it was all about Mines' dominance of the serve, dominance defensively and dominance from junior Alanna Winfield.
The Orediggers got seven kills from Winfield and another four from senior Frannie Cormier to take the third set, 25-14. Mines was then really clicking as it bludgeoned the visiting Mountain Lions, 25-12, in the final frame to close out the match. Six kills from Winfield, five from Cormier and another four from senior Megan Peterson was too much for UCCS.
